Product suppression, defined
Suppression is a per-product enforcement action: the channel removes the item from eligible serving while leaving your account active. The product may be marked disapproved, limited, or simply stop receiving impressions.
It is distinct from account suspension (the whole account is disabled) and from a normal performance drop (the product is still eligible, just not winning auctions). Suppression is a state the platform imposed because the product failed a rule.
The three flavors
Knowing which flavor you're facing determines the fix. They look similar in the dashboard but require different responses.
- Hard disapproval — explicit, stated reason, product removed. Easiest to diagnose; the policy is named.
- Limited or reduced serving — the product stays 'approved' but traffic is capped, often tied to quality, relevance, or restricted-category throttling.
- Silent suppression — no change in status, but impressions and spend effectiveness collapse. The most dangerous because nothing alerts you.
What triggers a suppression
Triggers fall into three families. Content and claim: banned or unsubstantiated claims, restricted-category language, misleading comparisons. Data: mismatched price or availability, missing or mismatched identifiers, image mismatch, landing-page mismatch. Policy and category: selling a restricted category without clearance, age-gated goods, or items the platform has separately prohibited.
Most recurring suppressions come from content and category — the families feed management does not flag.
The recovery sequence
Confirm the stated reason if there is one. Classify the trigger family. Correct the root cause, not the symptom — resubmitting unchanged wording almost always re-suppresses. Gather evidence: label, COA, landing page, screenshots. Submit the resubmission or appeal.
If the product was silently suppressed, you run preflight before resubmitting, because the channel will not tell you exactly what flagged it.
Suppression is reversible. Treat it as a structured correction problem, not a luck problem.
Frequently asked questions
My product says 'approved' but gets no impressions — is that suppression?
Possibly. Silent suppression keeps an approved status while limiting serving. Compare period-over-period impressions and CPC; if they collapsed without a status change while competitors still serve, treat it as suppressed.
Can I resubmit immediately after a disapproval?
Only after correcting the cited issue. Resubmitting unchanged copy typically re-suppresses and can escalate account-level scrutiny.
Is suppression the same as suspension?
No. Suppression affects one product; suspension disables the account. Repeated, unaddressed suppressions can move an account toward suspension, though.
